Kentucky Derby Museum’s student art competition returns for 30th year on January 18
Grand Prize Winner will take home box seats for Kentucky Derby 142

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The Kentucky Derby Museum’s annual art competition for students in Jefferson County, now in its 30th year, returns to the Museum next week.

The 2016 Horsing Around With Art: A Student’s View of the Sport of Kings runs January 18 through February 21 in the Matt Winn Gallery. Submissions come from students in grades 1-12 from any Louisville Metro school and showcase student work and perspective on the Kentucky Derby. This year, 34 schools submitted 265 pieces of artwork for the competition.

“The talent in our local schools is absolutely amazing. The fact that we not only get to showcase but also reward and encourage artistic growth in our youth is something that I’m very proud of,”  Heather Hill, Outreach Educator and Horsing Around With Art Coordinator, said.

One Grand Prize winner will take home six tickets to Kentucky Derby 142 and will have their artwork on display at the Kentucky Derby Museum for one year. Other prizes include a private tour of a Thoroughbred farm, a chance to experience Churchill Downs Racetrack’s backside during the first morning of Derby Week and high quality art supplies. A total of $5,900 will be awarded to winning schools’ art departments.

A panel of judges will select winners in several categories of distinctive and divisional awards. New this year is the Triple Crown Award, honoring American Pharoah. This category will showcase specially designed 2D and 3D triptych artwork produced by students.

All winners and exhibiting students will be recognized in a special ceremony at the Kentucky Derby Museum on February 9th.
