Our History

The Backside Learning Center, previously called the Klein Family Learning Center, is an initiative of the Kentucky Derby Museum. The Board of Directors of the Museum, along with Churchill Downs, made a choice to go beyond their obvious mission in order to serve and actively participate in the civic, economic and educational opportunities of the backside workers at Churchill Downs. This initiative started with the renovation of the old racing offices, which now house The Backside Learning Center.

The Learning Center began serving the people of the backstretch in May 2004, but officially opened on June 30, 2004. The Learning Center provides services at Churchill Downs from April to November and at the Trackside Training Center from December to March.
