Program Description
A major objective of this program is to improve the care horses receive, reduce the number of injuries to horses and humans, and increase the self-esteem of backside workers.
If you would like to register for any of the Groom Elite classes, please print the registration form and indicate on the form the classes you would like to take. Classes are free to backside workers. However, there is a small fee for those who aren't.

Groom Elite 101:
This class was developed for currently licensed backstretch workers who have some experience with horses. This course intends to improve their performance by covering such material as feeding management, anatomy, bandaging, horse behavior, horse health, tack and equipment, and shed row safety.

Groom Elite 201:
(Prerequisite: Groom Elite 101) During the Churchill Downs Fall meet, this course is meant to give deepen the knowledge obtained in the GEP 101 course and to discuss the development of bones, the respiratory system, common injuries, massage therapy, etc.

Trainer Elite 301:
This trainer's exam prep class emphasizes the rules of racing that govern the daily activities of licensed trainers. Individuals who want to become assistant trainers or trainers must know these rules to pass the written licensing exam given by most state racing commissions.

Owner Elite 101:
Owner Elite 101 is an opportunity to learn about the daily grooming, training and racing management of racehorses. Participants will learn about horse behavior, conformation and the basic anatomy of the front and rear legs. Attendees will form the "Elite Racing Office" that makes entries and fills out claim forms in accordance with the rules of racing discussed in class. Offered during the Spring Meet.
