The year Barbaro won, I gave the horse to all my buddies that would listen, we bet trifecta's and exacta's and a buddie of mine said if you so sure lets hammer him, I said what is the bet, he said 75 accross. So we did the bet and was waiting for the Derby and my wife shows up and we are all parting like crazy and she said who is that horse you like, I gave her my pick and she asked to see the program, looked at it for 10 seconds and said I like cats so she said how do I do an exacta box and how much does it cost, I gave her 4 dollars and she did a 2 dollar box Barbaro and Bluegrass Cat, everyone at the table was laughing, one guy said lets box it for 5 bucks each way. So we got our last bet in and when it was over my wife collected 572.00 or something very close to that for her exacta, we had it 2 1/2 times and collected 1200 plus. My wife thought she won the lottery, bought the boys a bucket of beer and ran off happy. Her only bet for the Derby and a great pay out. Our memories of Barbaro still run deep. RIP Barbaro

The year CHARISMATIC won it, I was unable to go. I sent 6 dollars with my buddy for a "$2 across-the-board" bet on Charismatic. I tuned in on TV for the race and much to my glee CHARISMATIC romped home a winner at 33-1 odds, as I recall. Later in the week I went over to my buddy's house and he paid me $102 I think it was. As the weeks went by, one day I was talking with a mutual friend of mine and my buddy, and I told her how he had graciously went to the mutuel window and placed my bet. She snickered and said he hadn't actually made it to the window with my money, meaning that the $102 he had given me came out of his pocket. Oh Well. Anyway the next time I sent money with him he DID go to the window. He and I remain good friends and go to Churchill every chance we get. I did buy him several beers the next time we went to the track, but I must admit I never had the guts to tell him that I knew he had coughed up my winnings out of his own pocket. SO ALAN IF YOU READ THIS I will take you to the track sometime and buy you a few MORE beers. So much for wagering on the horses ! Good Friends and horse racing...it always seems to even out in the end.
