Here you will find all of the information you will need to plan your field trip, sign up for one of our Special Programs or learn about our FREE Outreach Program to schools throughout the state. Our goal is to provide students with an understanding of the Thoroughbred industry in Kentucky, as well as knowledge of the rich cultural history and impact of the Kentucky Derby.
Why Study the Derby?
Historical Event-
Thoroughbred racing dates to the middle colonial period and for most of our history it was our most popular sport. The Derby is the oldest continuous sporting event in the U.S.
Cultural Event-
Over 150,000 people come from around the world to attend the Derby, and tens of millions watch on television. It is our community's and state's signature event.
Economic Event-
The most recent economic impact study shows that the Derby has an over $217 million impact on the regional economy. Overall, the horse industry in Kentucky has over a $3 billion impact generating over 55,000 jobs.
Athletic Event-
Understanding the roles of the jockey and Thoroughbred as athletes, as well as the scientific basis for their performance, helps provide insights and comparisions into human training, nutrition and health.
Diversity-
From slave jockeys who were our first sports "stars" to female jockeys and excercise riders to the large Hispanic workforce on the Backside. Thoroughbred racing is all about diversity.

What will your visit cost?
November 1st - March 31st, FREE ADMISSION for all students and youth groups in Kentucky and Clark, Floyd, Harrison and Washington counties in Indiana. Additionally, JCPS and Archdiocese of Louisville schools are eligible for a partial BUS SUBSIDY during this period.
April 1st - October 31st, admission is $3.50 pp (PK-5th) and $5.00 pp (6th -12th) for all students and youth groups in Kentucky and Clark, Floyd, Harrison and Washington counties in Indiana.
Required chaperones are free at the ratio of 1 chaperone for every 4 students for PK-3rd and 1 chaperone for every 10 students for 4th-12th. Additional chaperones are $6.00 each.
