Oral History Collection: Gary Stevens

Gary Stevens, native of Caldwell, Idaho, was born into a family of horse enthusiasts and started grooming horses at the age of eight. He started riding in 1979 and has three Kentucky Derby victories with Winning Colors (1988), Thunder Gulch (1995) and Silver Charm (1997). Stevens also has three Preakness and three Belmont Stakes wins. In addition, he has amassed eleven Breeders’ Cup victories. Stevens was honored with the George Woolf Memorial Jockey Award in 1996 and retired from racing in 2018 with 5,187 victories. He was inducted into the National Museum of Racing’s Hall of Fame in 1997.
