Alexa is internationally recognized as one of the leading sporting sculptors in the world, as well as a distinguished equine sculptor. Her Barbaro statue stands outside Gate 1 of Churchill Downs Racetrack and welcomes visitors from around the world to both Churchill Downs Racetrack and the Kentucky Derby Museum.
Alexa will share her experiences as she joined over 100 other artists in the quest to be chosen as the one to create the statue of Barbaro. The statue was commissioned by the horse’s owners, Ray and Gretchen Jackson. Gretchen noted that they were looking for an artist that could portray Barbaro as they remembered him best — a beautiful racehorse as well as an athlete. After a four month selection process, Alexa’s submitted piece was chosen as the one. She will share not only how she created the beautiful piece, but also how she engineered the piece to display the horse with all four of his hooves off the ground.
Also during this special morning event an exclusive Inside the Vault Tour will be presented featuring Barbaro collection items by one of the Museum’s curators.
