On Wednesday, January 23rd at 10:00 a.m. the 2013 “Horsing Around with Art” grand prize winner was surprised at Breckenridge-Franklin Elementary School (1351 Payne Street, Louisville, KY) during a special fifth grade assembly. The Kentucky Derby Museum’s executive director, Lynn Ashton, along with the school principal and members of the winner’s family, presented fifth-grade student, Cortez Vinson, with a dozen roses and the news that he will receive 6 box seats to this year’s 139th running of the Kentucky Derby.

The Grand Prize is given to the artist whose work is judged to best “capture the spirit” of the Kentucky Derby. The Grand Prize winner was selected this year by Churchill Downs President, Kevin Flanery. The box seats are sponsored by Churchill Downs, Inc.

Vinson will receive $500 for the art department at Breckenridge-Franklin for his award. He will also be given tickets to attend the Winner’s Party at the Derby Museum following this year’s historic race.

School principal Allyson Vitato says, “Cortez is a very giving student. He cares about art and shows great leadership with his fellow students. He has worked very hard to prepare his artwork and was just excited to participate in this contest. To have his talents recognized as the grand prize winner is such an honor for a very deserving student.”

Nearly 50 local students will receive recognition for their artwork as part of this contest.

First place in each division gets $500 for the school’s art department, for second the school gets $300, and for third the school receives $200. For the 3D/Sculpture and The Outriders Society Awards the schools get $100, and for the Grand Prize, the Thoroughbred Award, and the Backside Award the schools receive $500.

Each of the winners will also receive art supplies for their personal use.
