Kentucky Derby Museum
“A love of horses, history, interaction with people, learning something new, getting some exercise and giving back to the community. I wanted to do something completely different from my job I had retired from and this is it.”
“I like scanning the clippings in the Derby binders. I have attended about fifty derbies. Reading the articles brings back memories and gives me Derby trivia to remember.”
“I began volunteering at the KDM in 2017. I had retired and wanted to contribute to the community in a meaningful way.
Favorite memory? Once while working with the school children, I was standing near a picture of Bob Baffert, who I met once, and some children kept looking at the picture and then at me and they asked me if I were Mr. Baffert!”
“I really enjoy all of the people here from the employees to my fellow volunteers. They are all very welcoming and appreciative of our volunteer activities. My favorite activity is Hatitude. I enjoy seeing the faces of both men and women who have created their own derby hats.”
“I really enjoy escorting tours at the Kentucky Derby Museum. Each time, I learn something new about Churchill Downs and the Derby’s history. One of the highlights for me is helping guests create their own Derby hats through the Hatitude experience—it’s always a fun and memorable part of their visit.”
“I love the people at the KDM, the volunteers, the staff as well as meeting visitors from all over the country. It is always interesting to hear what brings people to Louisville and visit the museum. I enjoy following tours to the track and on the backside, HAWA, working Cultural Pass and helping with Hattitudes.”
