Kentucky Derby Museum Stable

Kentucky Derby Museum Stable

Right outside the Museum on to the Oaks Garden Terrace you will find our live, permanent stable exhibit. Here is where we house a Resident Thoroughbred and companion animal. Right now the stable area is closed as we undergo a major renovation project. Click here to learn more!

As many know, the Museum Stable was home to Winston, the Museum’s longtime miniature horse and companion, who retired to Old Friends Thoroughbred Retirement Farm in Georgetown, Kentucky, in February 2018. It is with a heavy heart that we announce the passing of our beloved miniature horse, Winston. He was a wonderful ambassador for the Museum for 22 years and enjoyed his final months at Old Friends. He will be greatly missed and will live on in memories of our visitors and in the Museum's story. For more, click here.

Also located in the garden terrace are the gravesites of five famous Kentucky Derby winners, Brokers Tip (1933), Swaps (1955), Carry Back (1961), Dust Commander (1970) and Sunny’s Halo (1983). Second place 2008 Derby finishing filly Eight Belles is interred in the Museum’s back garden under a Magnolia tree planted in her honor.
