Whenever friends visit Louisville, Kentucky Derby Museum is one of the best places to go. It's an easy way to get introduced to the history and traditions behind the Kentucky Derby, especially if you're not someone who knows much about horse racing.
People are surprised by how quickly they get interested in the stories. You become immersed in the Derby spirit and spend time learning about the horses, jockeys, fashion and memorable moments that have shaped the Derby over the years.
One of the best parts of the Museum is The Greatest Race, a 360-degree film that recreates the sights and sounds of Derby Day. Even after seeing it a million times, it still gives you chills.

While you're visiting the Museum, try adding a Barn & Backside Tour to your day. It takes you away from the grandstands and into the working side of Churchill Downs.
You get to see where horses are cared for before and after they race, and depending on the timing of your visit, you may see thoroughbreds returning to the barns to be cooled down, bathed and looked after by their teams.
It's a completely different perspective on the Derby and one of the things people enjoy most because it gives them a glimpse of what happens behind the scenes.
If you’re more interested in the Bourbon side of Derby history, the Bourbon & Bridles Experience is the way to go. The experience gives you a chance to learn more about the connection between the two industries while enjoying a guided bourbon tasting. You also get to learn how to make their own mint julep!
After your morning at the Kentucky Derby Museum, head to Wagner's Pharmacy, just a short walk from Churchill Downs.
Wagner's has been part of Louisville's racing community for generations. It opened in 1922 at 4th Street and Central Avenue as a pharmacy and gathering spot for Kentucky Derby jockeys and trainers. You can still feel that history as soon as you walk in. The walls are covered with racing memorabilia, photographs and other reminders of the people who have passed through over the years.
It's the kind of place where you don't need a fancy meal or a complicated order. Grab some Kentucky comfort food, find a seat and take some time to look around. There's plenty to see.
No Louisville weekend would feel complete without bourbon, so it is a must to spend your evening downtown on Whiskey Row.
Start at Angel's Envy, a great introduction to Kentucky bourbon. The experience gives you a chance to learn more about how bourbon is made while also seeing how Louisville's bourbon scene has become such a big part of downtown.
Even the friends in your group who aren't big bourbon drinkers will enjoy the tasting. There's something fun about learning the story behind what you're drinking, especially when you're experiencing it in the city where so much of Kentucky's bourbon history has taken place.
After dinner, walk around downtown and take your time exploring Whiskey Row. It is a nice way to end the day without trying to squeeze in one more activity.
By the end of the weekend, you will have covered a lot of ground. From exploring Kentucky Derby Museum, enjoying racing history first hand, drinking in Whiskey Row and spending plenty of time learning about Kentucky bourbon.
