Did you know there’s an entire vibrant community of both people and horses who live and work on the Backside of Churchill Downs? Take a peek behind the track and get a glimpse of what life is like for the 1,400 horses and hundreds of people who call the Backside home during racing and training season. In this guided van tour, you’ll ride between the signature green-roofed barns and among world-class Thoroughbreds as they are cared for and prepped for the day. Bring your camera for panoramic views of the racetrack, Grandstand, historic Twin Spires™, and, most important, horse baths.
The Barn and Backside Tour is great for horse lovers, but please note guests will not be able to touch the horses.
Visiting in winter? The Backside looks a little different during the winter season. Horses aren’t stabled at Churchill Downs from December–mid-March, but you’ll still get plenty of insight for life on the Backside, plus you can still get an up-close look at Triple Crown winner Secretariat’s historic barn and stall.
