Nothing compares to visiting the Backside of Churchill Downs in the weeks leading up to the Kentucky Derby! You never know who you may see – a legendary Derby trainer or the next Triple Crown winner.
On this guided van tour, you’ll be surrounded by Thoroughbreds, trainers, exercise riders, hot walkers – everything that brings this vibrant community to life. Your tour guide will point out the signature green-roofed barns where Thoroughbreds are housed in preparation for the “Run for the Roses.” And be on the lookout for the iconic yellow saddle cloths that adorn this year’s Derby Contender stalls. Have your camera ready for panoramic views of the racetrack, Grandstand, and the historic Twin Spires™.
This is a great tour for horse lovers, but please note that guests will not be able to touch the horses or enter the shed rows.
During the 7:00 a.m. and 8:30 a.m. tour slots, you’ll get to see Thoroughbreds training on the track as you stand railside along the backstretch.
You may enter the Museum at any time on the date of your ticket. The time you select is the departure time for your Derby Season Barn and Backside Tour. All tours depart on schedule and unfortunately, cannot be delayed for tardy or missing ticket holders.
When choosing a time for your tour, please make sure that if you are purchasing additional tours that the start and end times do not overlap.
Tours are conducted rain or shine. Umbrellas are prohibited for the safety of Thoroughbreds and riders on the track. In the event of rain, we suggest bringing ponchos and rain boots.
Please note: On rare occasions, tours are subject to change without advance notice and may be rerouted. Check our calendar to view amendments to our normal hours of operation.
